Harnessing sculpture, textiles, screen-printing and found objects, Sarah Contos revels in dualistic spaces that exist between playful and menacing, innocent and fetishist, anthropomorphic and primordial. Seeking to understand the multiplicity of connections relating to an object’s agency, Death of a New Romantic tests the limits of materiality through an experimental assemblage of tactile, soft textiles hand sewn by the artist and inter-woven with aluminium cast forms.
Contos’ works are mined with an absurd montage of the everyday, popular culture, historical and personal references. This includes the bringing together of traditional crafting techniques, 1970s macramé, ubiquitous domestic items, op-shop finds and a DIY punk aesthetic. With a shifting approach to identity, eroticism and femininity, Contos’ exhibition invites us to embrace the messy reality of our relationships to the psychological minefield of our everyday existence.
